Lesson activities

Starter Activity
  • Introduce the session with the lesson objectives along with the key word’s pupils will hear.
  • Circle time: Ask children to share something that makes them feel happy e.g., playing, singing, drawing, reading, a hug or spending time with friends or family.
  • Explain to the class that we can keep our brains and mind healthy and happy, in the same way we can with our bodies.
  • Happy to be me: Print of slide 2 for each child and ask them to complete the poem. Invite children to read their poem out and remind them how important it is to be happy with who we are.
Main Activity
  • Augustus and his smile: Listen to the video on slide 3. Talk about the short story as a class and ways children like to keep their smile.
  • My smile: As a class create a list of ways to keep our smile e.g., being positive, having fun, laughing, asking for help, playing games, doing exercise, sleeping or having quiet time etc. Print off the worksheet on slide 4 for each group and ask them to write down or draw all the ways to keep their smile.
  • Happy dance: Play the GoNoodle can’t stop the feeling song using slide 5 and follow the moves using a big screen. You can pause the dance and ask children to make up their own happy dance in small groups to show each other.
  • Build up bricks: Explain to the class that sometimes we all feel sad, frustrated, annoyed, angry, upset or cross. It is important that we build ourselves up to feeling fine again. Print the brick outline for each child using slide 6 and ask pupils to decorate their brick with ways they can build themselves up. Make a wall display in your classroom with everyone’s bricks on it.
Plenary
  • My happy place: Explain to the class that we all have a place that can make us feel happy, safe and comforted e.g., on the sofa having a cuddle, in the bath, on the bed reading a book, on a beanbag with a teddy etc. Ask children to share with the class where their happy place is and why.
  • Recap the lesson and ask pupils to remind themselves of one way they will keep their smile this week.
  • Read out to children how they can be kind to their minds using slide 7.
