Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask pupils to talk about what the word resilient means. Ask them questions around when they have had to be resilient. Can they give an example?

Active learning: In the hall, children will play a game of traffic lights. Encourage the children to travel in different directions. Shout out a different colour every so often and children will have to stop and stand completely still (red), stop and jog on the spot (amber), move again (green).

Main Activity

Use a selection of challenge cards (8-10 depending on the group size).

Split the children into groups of 2 or 3 (depending on class size) and place each group on a station with a visual resource card. Ask the children to solve the problem on the card within a time frame set by the teacher. Rotate the children to enable them to access all stations over the course of the lesson. Each card provides information on how to support differentiation with each task.

Explain and listen:

  • Ask the children what they enjoyed about problem solving.
  • Ask the children how they felt when they were successful.
  • Talk to the class about keeping an open mind to problem solve and never give up.
  • Reward the children for their effort and attitude towards problem solving and their resilience during the lesson.
Plenary
  • Form a circle with the children at the end of the lesson to review and give feedback following on the session.
  • Encourage children to describe how they felt when activities at the station caused them a problem and how they overcame the challenge.
  • To extend the children’s learning ask them what transferable skills they will take from the lesson and apply to their week.
