Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask pupils to talk about a problem they came across last week, whilst completing the challenges. Ask questions around how it impacted their feelings and mood when they solved the problem.

Active learning: Children will play a game of musical statues. Encourage the children to travel in various directions and make use of the space in the hall.

Main Activity

Use the same cards as the previous week.

Split the children into pairs or threes (depending on the class size). Using the same cards as last week, spread the cards around the room and start the groups from that station. Give the class a time frame within which to complete each card. Ensure you rotate the children, so they have access to all the visual resource cards throughout the lesson. Each card provides information on how to support differentiation with each task.

Explain the rules of the competition:

  • Every pair must complete their challenge card for the whole group to move onto the next one.

Reward the children’s resilience and problem solving skills.

Keep a tally of how many challenges the class completes during the lesson.

Plenary
  • Form a circle with the children at the end of the lesson to review and give feedback on the session.
  • Ask children to tell you which resilient qualities they have used today.
  • To extend the children’s learning ask them what transferable skills they will take from the lesson and apply to their week.
