Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask what “teamwork” means to them?  What skills do they need to work within a team?

Active learning: Children will play a warmup game of “stuck in the mud”. Give 2 or 3 children a bib (these will be the taggers). When a child is tagged, they must stand still and call for help, encourage the untagged children to free them by lightly tapping their hand. Rotate the children playing as the tagger throughout the warmup and increase the number of taggers if the game is too easy. Encourage the children to work together to get each other free.

Main Activity

Relay Races and Obstacle Challenges.

Split the children into 5 or 6 equal teams.

  1. Set up traditional relay races and facilitate some simple races with clear instructions. I.e. every team member must take part in at least 1 race.
  2. Set out some obstacles on the racetrack for children to jump over and avoid whilst they are completing the race. (Use beanbags and bibs to avoid children tripping).
  3. Stand children one behind each other facing forwards and provide them with a ball. In their group they will work to move the ball from the front to the end of the line. Ask children to complete one race by passing the ball overhead and another by passing the ball through their legs.

Ensure all children work together as a team and show respect for each other.

Discussion questions:

  • How did you feel being part of a team?
  • Did you help anyone in your team today?
Plenary
  • Form a circle at the end of the lesson to review and give feedback on the lesson.
  • Ask children what teamwork skills they may have used today.
  • Ask the children what they did in the lesson to be successful.
