Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask the children what they enjoy most about being outdoors?

Ask the children what responsibilities they need to explore and complete the outdoor activity as a team. Ask them what the benefits are of sticking together as a team throughout the activity.

Active learning: Divide the children into pairs of groups of 3 and sit them down together. Giving them 2 or 3 minutes ask them to discuss qualities they have within their group, i.e. leader, logical thinker, determined. Encourage the children to be positive about each other and chose a selection of the groups to talk about their group qualities.

Main Activity

Orienteering Number Dash.

Keep the children in the same group as their active learning. Prior to starting the activity spread out the Number Dash resource cards and provide each group with an answer sheet. Start one group on card one, another on card two and so on.

Explain the rules of the activity to the children (working out the maths sum on the card and recording their answer on the sheet as quick as they can) and set the timer!

Remind the children to be positive with each other, to stick together as a team and to use their maths fluency.

Keep a record of each team's completion time and use this to create a leader board. Once all groups have returned check the answers together and declare a winner.

Discussion Questions:

  • What did you enjoy from the lesson?
  • Did you find problem solving easier outdoors whilst you were on the move?
  • How can working in a team support you to make better progress?
Plenary
  • Form a circle at the end of the session and encourage children to give feedback on the lesson.
  • Ask children what teamwork skills they may have used today?
  • Ask the children what they did in the lesson to be successful.
  • Ask why a growth mindset is needed when working within a team?
  • How did communication support the team in the lesson?
