Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask pupils to talk about the importance of teamwork? What makes a team successful?

Active learning: Split the children into small groups and stand them in a line facing the front. In this group they will work to move the ball from the front to the end of the line. They can use different methods, i.e. overhead, through the legs but they must always face forwards. When the ball reaches the last child, they must run to the front of the line and restart the activity.

Who worked together as a team? What made them successful?

Main Activity

Using a selection of team challenge cards.

Split the children into groups of 4 or 5 and provide each team with a resource card. Ask the children to solve the problem presented to them, within the time frame set by the teacher. Rotate the children clockwise so they get chance to experience all stations over the course of the lesson. Ensure children have opportunities for self-reflection during the class.

Explain and listen:

  • Ask the children to complete the team game with good communication.
  • Encourage the children to work together.
  • Ask children to remember what skills they need to be a good team member.
Plenary
  • Form a circle with the children at the end of the lesson to review and give feedback on the session.
  • Encourage children to describe how they felt when they overcame a challenge as a team.
  • Ask children how they shared responsibility amongst the team.
