Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask pupils to talk about the importance of teamwork
and what qualities are involved in building a successful team. Ask children to
explain the positives and negatives associated with working in a team.

Active learning: Set up some simple relay games for the children. In small
groups they will work together to collect equipment and move the items to
the end of the line, competing to get the best time in the class.

Who demonstrated good leadership? Who motivated the group?

Main Activity

Using a selection of team challenge cards (8-10 depending on group size).

Split the children into groups of 4 or 5 and place each group on a station. Ask the
children to solve the problem presented to them, within the time frame set by the
teacher. Rotate the children clockwise so they get chance to experience all stations
over the course of the lesson. Ensure children have opportunities for self-reflection
during the class.

Explain and listen:

  • Ask the children to complete the challenge with fluency and flare.
  • Talk to the children about taking risks and why this can support a better
    outcome.
  • Talk to the class about the importance of finding strategies that work and
how they can transfer them to different situations they may come across.
Plenary
  • Ask children to form a circle at the end of the lesson to review and
    give feedback following the lesson.
  • Encourage children to describe how they felt when they overcame a
    challenge as a team.
  • Ask children how they shared responsibility amongst the team.
