Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask pupils about a time they were unsuccessful when working in a team. Ask them about the impact it had on their feelings and mood? Discuss how they overcame the problem.

Active learning: Split the children into small groups. Children will form a circle whilst holding hands, the group will then receive a hula hoop which they have to transfer around the circle without unlinking hands.

Use a timer to see which group can complete this challenge quickest!

Main Activity

Using the same team challenge cards as the previous week (week 5).

Keep the children in the same groups as last week. Ask them to sit down in a small area in the middle of the hall and encourage them to watch quietly and observe their classmates undergoing the challenge.

Each group will attempt the challenge card in front of the class and the teacher will record their time taken to complete it. Each group will do this, until everyone has attempted the card. The teacher will then reveal the times each group completed the challenge within.

Explain and listen:

  • Ask the children to complete the challenge with good communication and speed.
  • Encourage the children to work together and be positive towards each other.
  • Remind children to be resilient throughout each challenge.
  • How can you support each other to complete the challenge?
Plenary
  • Form a circle with the children at the end of the lesson to review and give feedback on the session.
  • Ask children to give you a quality they have used today.
  • Encourage children to describe how they felt when the group succeeded or failed a challenge.
  • To extend the children’s learning ask them what transferable skills they will take from the lesson and apply to their week.
