Lesson activities

Starter Activity

Discussion question: Ask pupils to remember a time they felt happy due to being part of a small team. What did it do to their confidence?

Active learning: Split the children into 2 large groups (10- 15). Children will form a circle whilst holding hands, provide the group with a hula hoop which they then must transfer around the circle without unlinking hands.

Use a timer to see which group can complete this challenge fastest!

Remind the children to be positive and support each other during this challenge.

Main Activity

Using the same team challenge cards as the previous week (week 5).

Keep the children in the same groups as last week. Ask them to sit down in a small area in the middle of the hall and encourage them to watch quietly and observe their classmates undergoing the challenge.

Each group will attempt the challenge card in front of the class and the teacher will record their time taken to complete it. Each group will do this, until everyone has attempted the card. The teacher will then reveal the times each group completed the challenge within and create a leader board. The teacher will update the leader board throughout the lesson and declare a winner at the end.

Explain and listen:

  • Ask the children to complete the challenge with good communication and speed.
  • Encourage the children to work together and be positive towards each other.
  • Remind children to be resilient throughout each challenge.
  • How can you support each other to complete the challenge?
Plenary
  • Form a circle with the children at the end of the lesson to review and give feedback on the session.
  • Encourage children to describe how they felt when they overcame or failed a challenge as a team.
  • What did they learn from today’s lesson? How could they transfer the skills they used today into other areas of school and home life?
